Maxxam has a core commitment to fostering advancement and innovation in chemistry. Our employees, as well as Maxxam as an organization, are dedicated to exploring the chemical and biological sciences and understanding the impact these sciences have on our customers and every facet of our lives. Through this work, we help our customers ask the right questions, and ultimately, help them find the answers so they can make decisions that are critical for their business, the environment, and the health and well-being of Canadians. Research and development in support of analytical science and service has been an integral part of Maxxam since the company was founded. Maxxam invests heavily in R&D collaborations with academic institutions, along with industry partners and government regulators. The contribution of Maxxam’s R&D Technical Committee was enriched in 2011 when we formally assigned a group of experienced scientists to operate as a dedicated Environmental R&D Group. Under the leadership of Dr. Taras (Terry) Obal, this group works closely with environmental industry stakeholders to address new technical challenges, developments and opportunities. These investments in people and R&D demonstrate that Maxxam is not only committed to high quality analytical data for routine analysis, but also to advancing science – both of which are essential components to the long-term success of our customers’ projects and their businesses. In February 2013, Maxxam announced a three-year, multi-faceted partnership agreement with the Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC) – the national, not-for-profit, umbrella organization that encompasses the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC), the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering (CSChE) and the Canadian Society for Chemical Technology (CSCT). Every year, we host customer conferences and workshops, and have sponsored numerous industry events including The International Year of Chemistry (2011) and the CSC 2012, 2013 and 2014 Conference & Exhibition. Maxxam actively supports the CIC’s student outreach efforts, including National Chemistry Week and classroom visits to conduct “The Canadian Water Experiment”, an initiative that aims to help students explore earth’s most critical resource, while teaching important fundamentals and applications of chemistry in water. The Maxxam Award is presented annually to a scientist residing in Canada who has made a distinguished contribution to the field of analytical chemistry. The 2016 Maxxam Award Winner is Dr. Michael Quilliam who received his award at the CSC2016 conference in Halifax in June. For a list of past Maxxam Award winners, please click here.
